Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
