The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
